Delivered to United Airlines in May 1972 as DC-10-10 N1812U. After twenty-five years in passenger service, this aircraft was sold to FedEx and converted to a freighter. The cockpit was upgraded to MD-10 standard in May 2007. But after a long life, the aircraft was withdrawn from use and stored at Victorville in October 2016. Seen here arriving from Memphis on a late Friday afternoon in San Diego.

Here today, gone tomorrow: the civil aviation scene is constantly changing. Niki's uniquely bizarre fly livery, and the airline itself, didn't seem to last much longer than a fly's lifespan, serving as examples of the ephemera of human civilization.

This InterSky Dash 8 arrives at Tegel from Friedrichshafen during the airline's heyday. InterSky faced increasing competition in the German domestic market, made a few ill-fated attempts to establish secondary bases, and invested in an expensive refleeting program with ATR-72s that led to insolvency in 2015. This particular aircraft was delivered to Palestinian Airlines in June 2000 as SU-YAM and also flew with Baboo as HB-JEJ before coming to InterSky. In early 2012, it started flying with Maldivian as 8Q-IAS.

Not something I expected to find during my travels in Panama. This Fokker 50 has a Panamanian registration, a Flybe logo, and CityJet colors. This was previously PH-DMD with Denim Air who flew it on behalf of Flybe, and before that OO-VLL with CityJet and VLM. Going back further in history, it flew with Austrian Airlines as OE-LFD. Nowadays it seems to be a spare or parts source for Air Panama, with a pair of company Fokker 100s seen behind, along with a few turboprops.

For a few years, the daily British Airways flight from London Heathrow to San Diego has been operated by a 747-400 in the winter season and a 777-300/ER in the summer season, although the flight went to year-round 747 service in 2020, or at least was planned to do so until the COVID-19 global health crisis changed everything. This jolly aircraft was part of a display of the equipment of the National Aeronaval Service of Panama, and was specially festooned with Christmas lights, stockings, and a garland on the propeller. This Dornier 328 previously served with Swisswings and Air Engiadina as HB-AEI, and briefly wore the colors of KLM Alps. Here seen arriving in the evening from Mannheim during the relatively brief period in which Cirrus operated scheduled flights from Tegel.

Delivered to Avianca in August 2009. Seen here still in the older, more colorful livery, at a time when Avianca aircraft could be seen in at least four different paint schemes since Avianca took over TACA at a time when the latter airline was itself in the middle of a rebranding effort. The newer Avianca scheme can be seen on the ATR-72, with registration TG-TRD, passing in the background.

This Gulfstream II was modified to serve as a Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA). Its cockpit was designed to closely resemble the flight deck of the Space Shuttle and the aircraft could be used to simulate the flight characteristics of the Space Shuttle during re-entry and landing after an orbital mission. The aircraft joined the collections of the US Space & Rocket Center in 2017.

Seen arriving from Vancouver. Frame delivered in September 2005 as a CRJ-705ER variant of the CRJ-900 with reduced seating to allow it to comply with scope clauses limiting the maximum seating capacity for aircraft flown by regional airlines, such as Jazz Air and here on its third paint scheme. In 2018 it was converted to CRJ-900 as the scope clause had been scrapped.
