A tandem-seat military variant of the Aeronca Chief, the L-3, originally designated O-58, was produced in relatively modest numbers by WWII standards - just 1400 or so. It was used mainly for training Piper L-4 and Stinson L-5 pilots. This one, 42-36161, is listed as written off on 11 December 1942 at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, but it was repaired. A tandem-seat military variant of the Aeronca Chief, the L-3, originally designated O-58, was produced in relatively modest numbers by WWII standards - just 1400 or so. It was used mainly for training Piper L-4 and Stinson L-5 pilots. This one, 42-36161, is listed as written off on 11 December 1942 at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, but it was repaired. This is a heavily modified Let C-11 (Yak-11) trainer now powered by an Allison engine. Ex N9YK which still had a radial engine. It was then called a Yak-9 but this seems to make no sense as the trainer was based on the Yak-3 while the Yak-9 was a slighty larger and heavier, all-metal fighter which never used a radial engine.
