This aircraft was delivered to Qantas as VH-EAG City of Hobart. It was sold to the RAAF in 1979 and scrapped at RAAF Richmond in 2009. The cockpit and forward fuselage was salvaged and is on external display at HARS, Albion Park. Since I last photographed it three years ago, the nose gear has been lowered and the rear of the fuselage section is elevated on a stand.

A17-716 being used to test the storpedoette, a small version World War 2 storpedo. An Australian invention, the storpedo used a small parachute to slow the descent of a canister designed to absorb shocks. It was cheaper than a conventional parachute but offering more protection than dropping with no chute at all. The storpedoette was for smaller aircraft than the storpedo required, in particular to deliver critical medical supplies accurately. A17-716 was sold in civil buyers in 1955. Possibly at RAAF Benalla. In 1944 this aircraft was converted to an ambulance. The pilot flew the aircraft from the front seat in an enclosed cockpit. The stretcher was mounted on top of the fuselage frame and covered by a fairing. It operated postwar with this configuration as VH-BIW. It was later restored to a standard two-seat DH82. Now undercover at the QAM, Ventura A59-96 survived the war to become a chicken coup. When taken on by the QAM it was little more than a fuselage. After many years of work the aircraft is now mostly together and represents a type of which only two survived RAAF service.
