Seen long before restoration for the Pima Air & Space Museum, this is the only surviving example of four modified Neptunes operated by VAH-21 on night interdiction work over the Mekong Delta. An extensive electronic sensor suite replaced the ASW gear, including LLTV, SLAR and equipment to detect vehicle ignition systems. Armed with twin 20 mm cannon in tail plus two minigun pods and four bombs underwing.

This bizarre experimental design was intended to lead to a VTOL ship-based convoy escort fighter but not surprisingly proved difficult to fly. Powered by a very unreliable Allison YT40-A-6 turboprop consisting of two T38s coupled together, it made a first untethered flight and transition to the horizontal in 8.54 - the first successful VTOL flight in history in an aircraft that was not a helicopter or an autogiro. Three were built but this was the only one to fly. Now stored for the NASM

Another shot of Blue Angels ship '6' - this time plus '5', which was Bu Aer 153876 (c/n 2450) - lost 7.8.73 during airshow at Lake Charles, LA. Pilot ejected safely, but shortly after the Blue Angels transitioned to the more manageable A-4. Look at the serial numbers - they happened to be almost a mirror image too! It may appear like a Photoshop clone job, but I can assure everyone it's straight from the slide. Quite a performance for big heavy jets

Back in the days when the USN was synonymous with colour. This VA-86 A-7C was later converted to a TA-7C two-seater and entered AMARC in 1992. It now serves the Greek AF. Following NATO exercise "Northern Merger", in which USS America joined with HMS Ark Royal to provide air support for a NATO task force amphibious landing, she visited Portsmouth for five days from 29.9.74. Decommissioned in 1996, she was used for attack testing with live weapons and was controversially scuttled off NC in 2005
