In 2003 and 2004, the Government of Madagascar contracted at least two companies to carry out seismic surveys throughout the so called "red" island. FUGRO was one of them, which had this australian registered Aero Commander sent over to Madagascar. This very aircraft was built in 1970 and was on the australian register for all it's life, before being withdrawn from use in 2008 and consequently broken up. See photo ID 326405 for another aircraft being used for seismic surveys in Madagascar at the same time.

5R-MKT was the second AS-350 to join the Helimission fleet in 1985, back then as HB-XPN. It was based in Cameroon between 1986 and 1997. It spent a few years in Switzerland before being transferred to Madagascar, where it is stationed since 2004. In 2006, it was upgraded to the BA version by Panterra in Canada.

A nice surprise visitor to TNR was this German AF Challenger, one of seven operated by the GAF to transport ministers and high ranking military personnel between 1984 and 2011. This particular airframe was sold to Canadian operator Air Tindi in December 2011 and now carries registration C-FTDA. Five more aircraft were sold to civilian operators as well, while ex 1203 is now being operated by the Gambian AF as C5-AFT.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (Tentara Udara Diraja Malaysia - TUDM) operates two VIP S-70's since 1997. The 2nd is M46-02 (c/n in doubt) and even though staffed by RMAF personnel, both helicopters are under the direct control of - and take orders from - the Prime Minister's Office. There were plans in 2015 that both helis would be transferred back to the RMAF and join four ex Brunei DF S-70's which were about to be handed over to Malaysia, but the deal with Brunei fell through. A total of six G222 have been operated by the Royal Thai AF since May 1995. By early 2010 however, all have been withdrawn from use already, as the plane gave the RTAF a lot of headache. Actually, the "triple two" has been nicknamed "trouble two" within the RTAF, as it had many technical issues and apparently did cost more to run than it's bigger brother, the C-130 Hercules. The airframe shown here was one of three parted out and somehow exchanged for a Saab 340B, which was received by the RTAF in May 2012. Scanned from slide.

Built in 1982, this short version of the Do228 first went to Norving A/S as LN-HPE, then to Sweden as SE-KKX in June of 1989 before heading to Kenya in December 2003. In late 2008, it has been seen in all white colors at Lokichoggio (LKG), an airstrip in northern Kenya from where many airplanes fly relief goods into southern Sudan. It also appears to have been based at Jubba in early 2010, operating for South Sudan Air Connection SSAC. More recently, it as been involved in an incident at Pibor, Boma State, South Sudan on September 5, 2020, while being operated by Transafrican Air.

The Indonesian Air Force operated 40 Swiss built Bravos elementary trainers between 1982 and 2015. They were based at the TNI-AU's main flight training facility in Yogjakarta. The abbreviation LM stands for "Latih Mukla" and means elementary trainer. The Bravos, as well as the advanced T-34C's trainers, were replaced by a single type, the Grob 120TP.

This 2004 built Ruslan was supposed to go to GATS Guinea as UR-CCX but was never taken up. It went to Abu Dhabi based Maximus Air Crago instead, where it is the only AN124 operated among an IL-76 and a L-100-30 Hercules. At one time, the company also had an Airbus A300-600 freighter in its fleet.

After B737 cargo planes were allowed to serve Wamena airport as from 2010, the Indonesian DGCA also cleared passenger 737's to land there in early 2014. Around 2018 however, the risk of 737 pax flights was re-evaluated and deemed to be too high, and consequently stopped, even though no incident happened with a pax 737. Reason's given were the relatively short runway length combined with Wamena's altitude of 5500 ft. In turn, the ATR-72 became the standard pax airplane again serving WMX. Note the kids on the other side of the runway, well within the airport premises....

Before joining the Kulula.com fleet in January of 2010, this 2000 built airframe had flown with Turkish airline SunExpress as TC-SUA, then with Spanish operator Futura as EC-IUC and finally with US operator Ryan International Airlines as EI-DND. It briefly was registered in the Czech Republic as OK-PIK (with leasing company GECAS). It joined Comair in August of 2015 and now wears the full "British Airways" livery, which is not as funny as when it was captured here during approach into JNB.
