Basic cockpit panel of the Bu-180

One of few Bu-180 Students surviving today. Registered HB-UTO between 1939 and 1969 and stored afterwards. Registered D-EUTO in 2007. First flight after restoration was in 2016.

Edgar Gotthold and journalist Willi Ruge flew from Berlin to Johannesburg via Rome, Cairo, Khartoum, Nairobi and Salisbury (Harare) in February and March 1938 and then back again - a distance of some 25,000 km and quite an achievement in this Walter Mikron-powered Bücker Student light aircraft. The Bü 180 first prototype, over Africa? This light aircraft flew from Berlin to Johannesburg and back in 1938, powered by a Walter Mikron engine. The intended 50-hp Zündapp engine was not yet available and a French Train 4T engine had proven 'totally unreliable' according to the Germans. Most Bü 180s used the Czech Walter Mikron. 'The Student flies'. This is the second prototype of the Bü 180, which was intended as a cheap civilian training aircraft. The V1, D-ELIO, first flew in November 1937. Only some 25 Students were built. Photo most probably taken at the Bücker works at Rangsdorf.

Rare Bücker type first flown in November 1937. The B model had a 60-hp Walter Mikron engine. Only some 25 Students were built, of which three were exported to Sweden. SE-AHJ, reportedly ex D-ESJE, was bought by a member of the Halmstad Flygklubb and later donated to the club. Wrecked in 1950. A surviving Student retook to the air in Germany in 2020 as D-EUTO.
