N16896 was ex RAAF A65-119 and had been purchased by an American company, Stan Air was owned by Stan Booker, a colourful aviation identity. Booker sold the DC-3 to Jetair, a Australian start-up airline that was trying to get around import restrictions on airliners. In April 1970 the DC-3 was registered VH-EQO.
