Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 214 "Black Sheep" started to operate with the A-4B Skyhawk in January 1962. This began a 27 year association between the Black Sheep and follow-on versions of the Skyhawk. In June 1989, the Black Sheep became the first operational squadron of AV-8B Night Attack Harrier IIs.
