G-AUNZ prepares to depart Richmond in the early hours of the morning in an attempt to make the first aerial crossing of the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. The aircraft and pilots Lieutenant John Moncrieff and Captain George Hood, both new Zealanders, vanished without trace. The irregular Morse tones sent from the aircraft ceased suddenly 12 hours into the expected 14-hour flight. Photo from: Hood Collection/State Library of New South Wales
