The US fiscal year-based serial system started in FY 1922. The AS prefix stood for Air Service. The Eberhart Steel Products Company from Buffalo, NY built about 50 SE.5s for the USAAS using British-made parts. Interestingly this airframe, as NC4488, was used in the filming of the war movie Hell's Angels and it survived to become G-BLXT in the UK.
