The ninth B-17E was fitted with Allison V-1710 inline engines by Lockheed Vega. The XB-38 was faster than the B-17 but its service ceiling was lower. The single XB-38 was lost on its ninth flight on 16 June 1943 when an engine caught fire and the crew bailed out.
