Instead of installing retardant tanks, the USFS only used a slip-in Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFFS) retardant system. In August 2018 the USFS lost interest in using the Hercules as AirTanker, and the 7 aircraft were transferred to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). 1709 last operated from USCG Air Station Kodiak, AK and is seen at Sacramento Airport, still in USCG livery
