former USCG 1709, one of 7 redundant HC-130Hs that were assigned to the US Forest Service in 2013 to be converted to Air Tankers. Instead of installing retardant tanks, the USFS only used a slip-in Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFFS) retardant system. In August 2018 the USFS lost interest in using the Hercules as AirTanker, and the 7 aircraft were transferred to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). 1709 last operated from USCG Air Station Kodiak, AK and is seen at Sacramento Airport, still in USCG livery This photo is copyright © Coert van Breda, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
