The LFU 205 is one of the first powered aircraft made of fibreglass (GRP -glass fibre reinforced plastic). In the 1960s, Germany had something of a head start with GRP used for aviation purposes glider construction and helicopter rotor blades. This knowledge was to be utilised with the LFU 205 prototype in order to gain experience with highly stressed GRP components. The first flight took place in March, 1968 and after all GRP flight-testing and research had been completed the aricraft was transferred to the DLR. The LFU was wfu in 2017 and flown to Schleissheim for display. This photo is copyright © Alastair T. Gardiner, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
