After being TOC by the USN, this F-4 was retained by McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis as an F-4B air frame test aircraft becoming the first aircraft to fire a Phoenix missile. On 11th December 1964 it was damaged and w/o in a deck accident on USS FD Roosevelt, therefore transferred to the Air Training Command at Chanute AFB, IL., assigned as ground trainer and redesignated as GF-4B.
