N4723U was involved in a clear air turbulence incident on December 27, 1997 that left one passenger dead and 102 injured. The aircraft returned to Tokyo-Narita. With N4723U due to be withdrawn from use during 1998, United opted not to repair it and it was flown to Marana, Arizona, for scrapping.
