While on a goodwill tour through Asia this An-2 crashed on 21 September 1991 during an emergency landing on the Indonesian island of Lombok, after its engine failed. All seven members of its crew survived the crash, though four suffered serious burns. It caught fire and exploded after crash-landing in a narrow valley near Bayan, Lombok. It had been travelling from Berlin to Sydney to mark the 100 years since Otto Lilienthal from Germany introduced the concept of wings for manned flight in 1891, which is generally considered as the beginning of human flight.
