On the forward fuselage is a badge depicting a JATO equipped penguin with helmet and goggles, under the text 'Extreme Altitude' in all caps. The 109th Airlift Wing provides annual support to the National Science Foundation. The LC-130s fly to destinations like Summit Station on the Greenland ice cap, where jet (actually rocket) assisted take-offs are often necessary from the not-so-solid snow runway at 3200 meters (10530 feet) above sea level.
