VH-RHG was the personal aircraft of Wing Commander Robert Henry Maxwell (Bobby) Gibbes, a World War II fighter ace. After the war he formed Gibbes Sepik Airways in Papua New Guinea. Gibbes sold the airline in 1958 and went on open a string of hotels under the Bird of Paradise name. He left PNG ahead of independence to live on his yacht in the Mediterranean before retiring to Sydney. He gave up flying in 2002, aged 85, and passed away in 2007.
