On 27th April 1942, this aircraft from 35 Squadron took off from RAF Kinloss to attack the German Battleship Tirpitz in Fættenfjord, Norway. Mines were dropped near the ship but the aircraft was hit and force landed on the frozen Lake Hoklingen. The ensuing fire caused the aircraft to sink. It was recovered in 1973 and allocated RAF maintenance serial 8465M. It is displayed with no attempt at restoration, simply conservation work having been carried out to prevent further deterioration. A magnificent and poignant exhibit. This photo is copyright © Mick Bajcar, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
