On 1 December 1951 312 Squadron was formed and the first commander of the Tactical Fighter Group, Maj Flinterman, had a dog called Bonzo. The dog and it's name soon became the mascot of the this fine squadron, and this was reflected in the special tail to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of 312 Sqn.
