D-1398 served for more than 20 years as a research aircraft at the DLR - Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt. It was equipped with sensors and instruments in the wings and fuselage to do measurements in the lower atmosphere. Later it went to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum as seen here. The Kranich III was designed by Hans Jacobs and made its first flight in 1952. This photo is copyright © Peter Vercruijsse, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
