'The Duce departing for Rome with his trimotor.' This was the prototype of the SM.72 bomber and transport, first flown in 1932. Military serial, MM219. The type did not find favour with the Italian air force. After brief use as an Italian government transport, the plane was flown to China to be presented to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, and supposedly soon 'rescued' him and his staff. Six more S.72s were delivered to China to be used against the Japanese. Italian postcard. This photo was added on 18 February 2021, and has since been viewed 1155 times. |
