One of just four airworthy Nimrod MR2s left during the final month of RAF service. Due to budgetary constraints, the MR2 has been withdrawn from service a year earlier than originally planned. Just as normal, the final days of operations saw one aircraft on constant standby at Kinloss, ready to provide SAR cover in the event of an incident at sea. Until the Nimrod MRA4 comes into operational service in 2012, the shortfall in the UK's SAR capabilities will be provided, in part, by RAF Hercules.
