KLM used to be a Douglas operator and this was its very first 737, named after Willem Barentsz, the Dutch explorer who also gave his name to the Barents Sea. Trying to reach the Far East through the Arctic, his expedition got stuck in the ice and spent the winter of 1597 there. The aircraft was retired exactly one year after I took this photo, and scrapped at Kemble. This photo is copyright © Peter de Jong, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
