The end was nigh for the Mighty Hunter. The British Ministry of Defence had announced that they would bring forward the planned retirement date of the Nimrod MR2 to March 2010. This was despite the MR2's replacement, the Nimrod MRA4, not being expected to become operational until 2012. The MRA4 was later cancelled leaving a sever shortage in the UK's reconnaissance and SAR capabilities.
