Long-range bomber prototype first flown on 2 May 1935. A second prototype, the DB-2A, and twelve DBA series aircraft were also built. In August 1937 this plane, captained by Sigizmund Levanevsky, departed Moscow for a flight to Fairbanks but went missing near the Alaskan coast. A major international search was fruitless. The reg is URSS-N209 with a Cyrillic N. URSS (French) and USSR (English) were used interchangeably on aircraft flying abroad, even though the regular Soviet CCCP prefix officially consisted of Roman letters.
