Although the Bell X-1 has taken all the glory other aircraft were used in the transonic test program. This Skystreak (ex BuNo 37972, the third and last built) flew 78 missions for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics accummulating lots of invaluable flight test data near the speed of sound. This one of only two that survive and is on display at the very interesting Carolinas Aviation Museum. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
