The Focke-Wulf Fw 61 is often considered the first practical, functional helicopter and was first flown in 1936. Only two aircraft were produced with the first prototype, D-EBVU, making its first free flight in June 1936 and by early 1937, the second prototype, D-EKRA, had also flown. Neither of these machines appear to have survived WWII, although this replica is on display at this super museum. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
