The Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego has a truely unique collection of authentic WWI aircraft. This came about because it inherited many of the surviving pieces from Herman Göring's collection that formed the Deutsche Luftfahrtsammlung (German Collections of Aircraft). The collection was exhibited in ornate 19th century hangars near the pre-WWII Berlin railway station. After several pieces were lost during a bombing attack in 1943, the remaining planes were hurridly and crudely cut up and transported east for safekeeping. After the war the survivors became the property of the Polish government.
