On 16 June 1955 members of the Argentine military staged a bloody coup against the Perón regime, with aircraft indiscriminately attacking the Plaza de Maya area and killing over 300 civilians, according to Wikipedia's Bombing of Plaza de Mayo article. The coup failed and up to 40 aircraft evaded to Montevideo in Uruguay where their crews and passengers were interned. Hank Walker's photos presumably show the aircraft being picked up by loyalist personnel. On the right is a C-54 of the Argentine navy. I-094 to C-094 in 1959. Preserved in a park in Merlo, Buenos Aires. Photo by: Hank Walker / Life This photo was added on 16 March 2022, and has since been viewed 345 times. |
