The Super Frelon was so named because it was preceded by the Sud SE.3200 Frelon (hornet), designed by the former Sud-Est company. The photo is understood to have been taken at the time of the prototype's first flight from Le Bourget on 10 June 1959. The tailboom almost looks too stubby and endplate fins were added to the second prototype. Various problems persisted, however, including one ton of excess weight.
