The boss bird marked as 162 FS, referring to the "Sabrers"of the 162nd Fighting Squadron. The squadron transferred to F-16C in 1993 when they retired the A-7 Corsair. Of note... this aircraft, assigned to the squadron in December 1993, became famous in 1993 when it served the 23rd Fighter Squadron (then based at Spangdahlem). 86-0262 was used to shoot down an Iraqi MiG-23 that violated the no-fly zone on 17 January 1993 during the Gulf War. The kill-marking is even these days still visible below the cockpit. This photo is copyright © Stephan de Bruijn, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
