The aircraft was in an exercise off the southern California coast when it had an uncontained turbine failure in the No. 2 engine. This failure also damaged the No. 1 engine controls. With a high landing speed the aircraft could not land at North Island because of the short runways (8,000 foot). It decided to land at Miramar with the long 12,000 foot 24R/6L runway. This is the approach to runway 6L.
