In September, 1910 the Peruvian pilot Geo Chavez became the first pilot to fly across the alps. He accomplished this feat in a Bleriot XI, although unfortunately he crashed upon reaching Domodossola due to wing failure and died three days afterwards. Nevertheless, his monumental achievement was marked by the commissioning of this replica 100 years later. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
