Imported in 1951 as an Auster J-1, VH-AYJ was fitted with a 150hp Lycoming engine in 1959 by Kingsford-Smith Aviation Services and redesignated a J-1BL. It was sometimes known as the "Kingsmith". The extra power saw VH-AYJ used for a glider tug. The aircraft was still on the register in 2017.
