Bulgaria took out a licence with Focke-Wulf to bulid an air force trainer based on the Fw-44 Stieglitz. The DAR 9 was the initial designation, powered by a Siemens-Halske Sh-14-radial engine. Surviving aircraft after WWII were re-engined with Walter Minor 6.III inline engines, being designated DAR-9A, due to difficulty in procuring spares and the poor condition of the Sh-14 engines. DAR-9s were used for training in Bulgaria until at least 1949. Nine surplus DAR-9s were transferred to the Yugoslavian AF in 1947 but had been wfu by 1958. This is the only surviving example of the 42 built. This photo is copyright © Alastair T. Gardiner, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
