A cliff on the island of Sylt was used to launch gliders from and this was probably why seaplane gliders were conceived in Germany. The well-known glider pilot Ernst Jachtmann designed and built this aircraft. Jachtmann was a Lufthansa pilot around 1940 and the sole Jacht 71 was operated by the NSFK-Gruppe Lufthansa.
