RAF Croughton was built in 1938 and known as RAF Brackley until July 1941. Originally a satellite station for 16 OTU based at Upper Heyford. It later became an emergency landing field for damaged aircraft keeping its landing lights on regardless of enemy intruders. In 1942 1 GTS moved in from Thame with their fleet of Hotspur and Horsa gliders. Flying ceased on 25 May 1946. The USAF arrived in 1950 in a non flying role.
