In total 294 examples of this superb night-fighter were constructed. Advanced features included cannons mounted to fire at an oblique angle, the first steerable nosewheel on an operational German aircraft and the world's first ejection seats on an operational aircraft. This Uhu (Eagle Owl) was recovered from Grove in Denmark and shipped to the US in 1945 aboard HMS Reaper. The He 219 A-2 wing is under restoration and will be re-assembled with the fuselage and engines on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
