Italy signed a licence production and development agreement for the Vampire in October 1949. After initial deliveries of British-built aircraft, licence construction by Fiat and Macchi took over. When Britain placed an embargo on exports to Egypt after Suez, 58 ex-AMI Vampires were rebuilt by Macchi, of which most were flown out but 15 shipped in crates marked as glass products. This NF.54 was used by the All-Weather Fighter School at Amendola and later preserved in Turin before moving to the Italian AF Museum.
