Built in February 1943 at Factory No. 1 in Moscow and delivered to the 7th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. On 28 January 1944 the Shturmovik was shot down while attacking German troops. The pilot landed the damaged aircraft on frozen Lake Bebro about 70 miles south of Leningrad. In 1992 the wreck was recovered and brought to the US. Wooden components accounting for nearly half of the aircraft's structure had rotted away but over recent years Pima have accomplished a painstaking full restoration, completed in 2020.
