When development of the Delta Dart began in 1955, it was seen as an upgraded Delta Dagger and the original intention was to designate it as the F-102B. But so major where the enhancements that a new designation was warranted. The F-106 eventually bowed out of service in 1988 when the last ANG units retired them.
