Francis Chichester flew across the temperamental Tasman Sea alone in this Moth via Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. The photo was taken at Norfolk Island according to the source and we believe this is Emily Bay, where Chichester took off on 1 April. At Lord Howe the aircraft capsized in a squall, but the islanders helped to repair it and Chichester made it to Jervis Bay, NSW on 6 June. Not content with this achievement, he left Sydney on 3 July 1931 for a flight to England or around the world, but he crashed the Moth in Japan. Photo from: University of Sydney Library
