The second XP-56. The first aircraft had been destroyed in a high-speed taxiing accident at Muroc (Edwards AFB) in October 1943. Flight testing of the second aircraft ended after 10 flights when it was deemed to hazardous. The aircraft has been preserved by the Smithsonian Institution.
