At the end of the 1980s the Congress denied funds to supply the AH-64 Apache to the Marine Corps. It was decided to develop a more powerful versione of the AH-1T then in use. 179 new AH-1W Super Cobra were built together to the upgrading of 43 AH-1T to the new standard. The AH-1W had the capability to carry and fire AIM-9 Sidewinder and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles (mocks shown in this photograph).
