Like many Lightnings, XS540 was first flown by Roly Beamont, taking to the air from Samlesbury where it was built on 25th May 1965. The trainer's service career spanned 111 Sqdn, 226 OCU (as seen here) and 5 Sqdn before being given maintenance serial 8534M at Binbrook in 1976 with the intention of transfer to Manston. This didn't happen and it was removed as scrap in September 1987 This photo is copyright © Richard Vandervord, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
