The name refers to the Romanian city of Alba Iulia on the Mureş River in Transylvania, Romania. The ciry's former name is Alba Julia or Alba Yulia, but Alba Iulia is its modern name. Which of these names is carried by this Tarom aircraft is not entirely clear, but it certainly appears to be the old name.
