Before Changi Airport began commercial operations on July 1, 1981, Paya Lebar had been the main airport in Singapore since 1955, replacing the old Kallang Airport. Paya Lebar became a complete military airbase in 1981 when Singapore Changi Airport was opened and was subsequently renamed as Paya Lebar Air Base.
