This was the second Skyhawk to be built, flying as a YA4D-1 in 1954 just two months after the prototype. Transferred to Naval Aircraft Rework Facility (NARF) in 1960 and emerged as a standard A4D-1 (A-4A from 1962), joining VA-83 at NAS Oceana until transferred to Naval Air Facility China Lake for tests in late 1962. Stuck off in mid-1963, it went into store at Litchfield Park but was retrieved by NATC at Patuxent River in 1967 for further testing. Finally retired in 1969 and by 1979 was with the museum and restored to its VA-83 colours This photo is copyright © Richard Vandervord, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
