The D identified the fourth main model of the aircraft family, and the L3 the third series of Lycoming engines used by Piaggio. In this case the turbo engine Lycoming LTP-101. APH means that this version was used for aerophotogrammetry, a service that the Italian Air Force operated also for other Ministries.
